1955 Commemoratives



Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts: 3 Cent Rose Brown. A reproduction of the self portrait of Charles Willson Peale commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Pennsylvania Academy of the fine Arts.

Land Grant Colleges: 3 Cent Green. Issued to commeorate the 100th anniversary of Michigan State College and Pennsylvania State University, first of the land-grant type institutions to be founded.

Rotary International: 8 Cent Deep Blue. Commemorates the 50th anniversary of the founding of Rotary International and with a globe and hand held torch, symbolizes the enlightenment carried to all parts of the world.

Armed Forces Reserve: 3 Cent Purple. A stamp to honor the Armed Forces with the five branches of service represented in uniform -- Marines, Coast Guard, Army, Navy and Air Force.

New Hampshire: 3 Cent Green. This special stamp was released to honor the occasion of the sesquicentennial of the state's famous landmark, "The Old Man Of The Mountains".

Soo Locks: 3 Cent Blue. Celebrates the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Soo Locks and pictures the Great Lakes with two steamers underway.

Atoms For Peace: 3 Cent Deep Blue. Issued in support of a Atoms for Peace policy and quotes "....to find the way by which the inventiveness of man shall be consecrated to his life".

Fort Ticonderoga: 3 Cent Light Brown. This stamp was released to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Fort Ticonderoga, which played a vital role in the Revolutionary War due to its strategic location.

Andrew W. Mellon: 3 Cent Rose Carmine. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrew W. Mellon, financier and art collector, who also served as U.S> Secrretary of the Treasury from 1921-1932.
