1940 Commemoratives



Pony Express Rider: 3 Cent Henna Brown. Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the establishment of Pony Express service. Depicts a rider leaving a relay station with mail.

Three Graces (Boticelli): 3 Cent Light Violet. The famous Roticelli painting symbolizes the friendship and good will of the Pan-American Union on its 50th Anniversary.

Idaho State Capitol: 3 Cent Bright Violet. Issued on the 50th Anniversary of Idaho's statehood, this stamp features the Idaho State Capitol in Boise.

Wyoming State Seal: 3 Cent Brown Violet. This reproduction of the Wyoming State Seal was issued to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Wyoming's admission to the Union.

Coronado and his Captains: 3 Cent Violet. Released on the 400th Anniversary of the Coronado Expedition through the Southwest. From a painting by Gerald Cassidy.


1940 Commemoratives



Statue of Liberty: 1 Cent Bright Blue Green. A "National Defense Stamp" Issued to help raise consciousness of the need for a strong national defense.

Anti-Aircraft Gun: 2 Cent Rose Carmine. The 2nd of the three National Defense Stamps, and picturing a 90-millimeter anti-aircraft gun.

Torch of Freedom: 3 Cent Bright Violet. The 3rd National Defense Stamp, depicting a torch of "enlightenment" with the words "Security Education Conservation Health" above.

Lincoln Emancipation Statue: 3 Cent Deep Violet. Issued on the 75th Anniversary of the 13th Amendment, which freed the slaves, this stamp shows Abraham Lincoln granting freedom to a slave.
