Fort Sumter: 4 Cent Light Green. This issue marks the firing of shore batteries upon a federal garrison at Fort Sumter, thus beginning the Civil War. Battle of Shiloh: 4 Cent Peach Blossom. This issue recalls the bloody Battle of Shiloh in which both North and South sustained heavy losses. Battle of Gettysburg: 5 Cent Gray and Blue. Remembers the see-saw battle which resulted in a Confederate defeat. At the cemetary dedication ceremonies Abraham Lincoln delivered his memorable Gettysburg Address. Battle of the Wilderness: 5 Cent Dark Red and Black. Marks the battle at which Grant planned to decimate Lee's army. In the end Lee inflicted 18,000 Union losses to his own 10,000. Appomattox: 5 Cent Blue and Black. Marks the end of the Civil War when General Lee surrendered at Appomattox to Gereral Ulysses S. Grant. |
